1908 P $20 St Gauden - No Motto - PCGS Certified MS-64 Bargain below PCGS listing

The $20 Double Eagle, re-designed in 1907 by August Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, is considered by many
to be the most beautiful of American Coins.

When the coin first appeared in 1907 the relief was very high, almost sculptured in appearance. Production problems prompted a design change
to a more shallow relief after the issuing of only 11,250 pieces.

In 1908 the $20 was again modified by the addition of the motto "In God We Trust."
Note that the above coin was produced before the motto was added.

Following the 1933 recall of gold coins, most of the Double Eagles struck during the 1920's and 1930's were either melted into bars or sent
overseas in payment for international transactions.

Despite a higher recorded mintage for some of the years, many of the issues are quite rare.
